Drowning is the most common cause of traumatic death in children aged under five years in Queensland. Around eight Queensland kids drown in swimming pools each year and 100 more are taken to hospital as a result of nearly drowning.
The Local Government and Planning portfolio is responsible for introducing the new pool fencing laws to help reduce swimming pool tragedies in Queensland.
Councils and private certifiers are responsible for enforcing the State legislation and inspecting and certifying fencing for residential swimming pools.
